Subaru Symmetrical Drivetrains

Subaru’s horizontally opposed Boxer Engine, transmission, propeller shaft and rear differential (the components that transfer drive from the engine to the wheels) are all simply arranged in a perfectly symmetrical straight line. The low centre of gravity and ideal front/back and lateral weight distribution directly contribute to driving stability and precise handling. The All-Wheel Drive transfer mechanism is mounted inside the transmission unit, rather than in a separate transfer case. This produces optimum weight distribution and contributes to the driver’s all-round sense of good balance. Collision Protection

Collision Protection acts to protect occupants in the event of an accident. In Subaru vehicles the engine and luggage compartments are designed to crumple in a collision, absorbing and dispersing impact energy. This also minimises shock transmitted to the passenger cabin. In a collision, a support beam inhibits the rearward movement of the steering wheel. The steering column is designed to collapse on impact, again to minimise transmission of shock energy to the driver. The Ring Shaped Reinforcements which form the passenger safety cell result in greater body rigidity and minimum distortion on impact. Reinforced door beams and strengthened side frames provide extra protection in a side collision. A secondary benefit of the high strength body is that it also provides a solid base frame for suspension, ensuring body flex does not affect vehicle stability.

Collision Avoidance

Collision Avoidance acts to prevent an accident from happening. Subaru’s symmetrical constant All-Wheel Drive (AWD) makes a significant contribution to active safety. It dramatically improves cornering. Front wheel drive cars can be prone to understeer. This occurs when the front wheels lose sideways traction or grip, when cornering. The vehicle may plough off the road, front first. Rear-wheel drive cars can be prone to oversteer. This occurs when the rear wheels lose sideways traction or grip, when cornering. The rear of the car may start to take over the front – or spin. AWD produces a far more neutral balance, with a much higher level of grip – an important factor in unexpected or critical situations, such as on a wet, slippery surface, halfway around a corner.

Airbags

All Forester models protect both the driver and the front seat passenger with dual front airbags and dual front side airbags. The front passenger airbag has a two-stage inflator so that in a low-to-medium severity collision airbag deployment is managed to reduce the risk of injury. In a high severity collision, however, both inflators will activate simultaneously, ensuring faster airbag deployment to match the increased rates of deceleration.
